Backflow is when water flows backward into the water distribution system, caused by sudden or gradual changes in pressure in plumbing systems. There are two main causes of backflow:

Sudden reductions in water pressure in the distribution system, for example, when water mains break or firefighting occurs.
Recirculation of water through pumps, thermal expansion and elevation, which can cause higher water pressures than the incoming water supply.

These changes in pressure can cause the water to reverse its direction as it flows through the plumbing system, creating backflow.
